A 23-year-old college student, Kirti Sharma, was arrested on Sunday by the Kolkata Police for allegedly posting objectionable comments against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and revealing the identity of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Sharma, a resident of Lake Town, was apprehended from her home after she reportedly shared three Instagram stories related to the tragic incident involving the 31-year-old woman doctor. According to the police, Sharma's posts not only disclosed the victim’s identity, which is a punishable offense under Indian law, but also contained "offensive comments" and threats directed at the Chief Minister.
The police described Sharma's posts as "provocative in nature," claiming they had the potential to incite social unrest and promote hatred among communities. A complaint was lodged at a local police station in Kolkata, leading to the registration of an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Bharat Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
Sharma was arrested on Sunday afternoon and is scheduled to be produced before a sessions court today. Her arrest comes amid widespread protests by the medical fraternity demanding justice for the brutal rape and murder of the doctor.
